A major in history consists of at least nine courses and must include:
One foundation course focused on European history:
One foundation course in North American history:
One foundation course considering the history of Africa, Asia, or Latin America:
At least four advanced history courses (courses numbered 200 or greater)
At least one additional history course.
Additional Information:
All exceptions to major requirements must be approved by the department chair.
At least one of the nine courses required for the history major most focus on the “pre-modern era”.
Currently the courses listed below can serve in this role.
First year seminar
One first year seminar taught by a member of the history department may also contribute to the major, but will not be considered one of the three required foundation courses. Further, no more than two exam equivalency courses (HST-100 , HST-120 , or HST-130 ) and/or first year seminars may contribute to major requirements.
Majors wishing to pursue a career in teaching social studies must complete:
In addition to prescribed courses in the major which must include
- HST-237 South Carolina
- at least two other courses focused on the history of the United States
- at least three European history courses with one or more numbered between 200 and 399
