A major normally consists of at least nine courses beyond SPN-201 and usually includes:
two civilization courses:
two language or linguistics courses:
one literature survey course:
one more literature course numbered between 410 and 475 in Spanish, and
one additional course numbered 400 or greater in the discipline.
Further considerations
All majors must enroll in at least one course in their major language during both their junior and senior years. All majors are also strongly encouraged to participate in a study away program before their senior year as well.
Students planning to teach Spanish in elementary and/or secondary schools must complete a major in the field to obtain a teacher certificate. These students must also successfully complete:
Teacher Certification
Students interested in teaching Spanish in elementary and/or secondary schools may take advantage of our teacher certification program at the undergraduate level or pursue certification through Furman’s Master of Arts in Teaching. Consult with the Coordinator of Foreign Language Education or the Education Department (https://www.furman.edu/academics/education) to learn about the programs of teacher education.
