Military Science

The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) courses prepare young men and women to become leaders as commissioned Officers in the U. S. Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard.

Any student may take basic courses (MSL 101, MSL 102, MSL 201 and MSL 202) without incurring a military obligation. Courses numbered 301 and greater are open to contracted ROTC cadets only. Cadets must pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree during their tenure.

Students seeking a commission must complete the following to be eligible to serve as an Officer in the U.S. Army:


The basic course sequence by the end of sophomore year OR receive credit for Basic Camp, JROTC in high school or successful prior service with the U.S. Army:


And five additional criteria:


  • successfully complete the 38-day Advance Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky, the summer before the final year of the program, typically between the junior and senior year
  • pass the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT)
  • execute the Combat Water Survival Test
  • pass HST-124 War, Military and Society in American History  
  • and, meet or exceed all university degree requirements to earn a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree.
